Tumblr vs. Blogger

Back in March of 2010 when I got the domain AndroidsDontDance.tv, I wanted a place where I could post my nonsense ramblings, share my movie opinions and repost rage thread over and over. At that time, we at ThatWasJunk.com were using Blogger because it seemed like the best option. It was easy to use even for the completely computer illiterate writers of the movie blog. Shortly after starting That Was Junk, we gained a domain name and some web hosts and moved on over to Wordpress which handles web hosting very well, but is a bit technically more advanced than blogger.

Now I'm no tech savant nor am I tech ignorant but I just wanted the easiest method for sharing things. This is when I discovered Tumblr. I found out that if I had a Tubmlr and saw a picture, video, or article someone else had on their Tumblr that I only had to click "reblog" and boom, it was on my page. This made sharing lolcatz very easy. Then, to top it off, I could follow these other Tumblogs à la Twitter and see people's periodical post on my dashboard. It was really cool. I followed some really good blogs that had some really funny stuff and I followed blogs that posted some really hot stuff. I also liked that Tumblr had HUNDREDS of different themes to choose from. So many that I rarely saw the same theme twice (outside of the few default themes.)

Tumblr didn't come without it's problems. I followed a lot of blogs. But I was noticing a trend with the people who posted. 1/2 of the people I followed were teenagers posting random crap and then whined about their teen lives in between posts. 1/8 were guys who incorporated the word "bear" "cub" "woof" or "wolf" in their screen names, and the other 1/8 were screaming queens that posted random Lady gaga posts and pics of them being "fabulous," and the last 1/4 were people who posted awesome things I cared about such as anything old or Victorian, movie things, interesting articles, and cock.

Now of course I don't have to follow these whiny teens but it seems like most of Tumblr is comprised of teenagers and porn. And I of course added the bear/cub/woof/wolf guys for the porn but it got old to me. I hated coming to my dashboard wanting to just find something funny and their is a big hairy cock being shoved in my face (no hetero). I know. No sane man would complain about such a thing but over time, I got so desensitized by it I just wanted it to go away. Seeing people post pictures of themselves eating a chip, washing a dish or just sitting there is retarded and gets old fast. And just like Twitter, the teens are so fixated on how many people follow them. It got annoying.

On the plus side, I love that Tumblr updates my Twitter and Facebook despite the fact that it often would take hours. But Tumblr's final straw for me was the fact that it seems to never want to work when I want it to work. They always seem to be in maintenance mode and the site would be down forever!

So, in the end, I've decided to settle with Blogger. It's sucks that to share things takes more than a few clicks but it's not too bad. Blogger also doesn't automatically update any of my social networks but I do like that I can follow other Blogger blogs. Blogger is setup more like a blog than just a page of stuff so that's another plus. And lastly, when creating a new post with Blogger, there is a lot more I can do.

So Blogger it is. For now at least.
